If you want to see the frozen landscape and experience heavy snow, you must visit Nathula Pass Sikkim, between November and March. However, you must know that heavy snowfall often blocks the roads during these winter months, causing sudden travel cancellations.
For the most comfortable and reliable trip, the best time to visit Nathula Pass Sikkim is during the bright spring and summer months from April to mid-June, or during the clear autumn months of October and November. During these times, the skies are bright blue, and the roads are fully open. You should strictly avoid the heavy monsoon season in July and August because landslides are very common and often trap vehicles for hours.
You must start your journey from Gangtok. You cannot take your own personal car or a rented self-drive vehicle to the border. The military only allows registered local tourist vehicles (usually heavy SUVs like the Mahindra Bolero or Toyota Innova) to drive on this mountain road.
You must book a seat in a shared taxi or hire a private vehicle through a recognized tour operator in Gangtok. The drive from Gangtok to Nathula Pass Sikkim takes about two to three hours. The road is incredibly steep and features many sharp turns. As you drive higher, you will watch the green forests slowly disappear and turn into a white, frozen desert.
Because Nathula Pass Sikkim is a military zone, there are no hotels or large restaurants at the top. You must base your stay in the city of Gangtok.
- Army Canteen at the Top: Once you reach the pass or the Baba Mandir, you can buy hot tea, coffee, and fresh momos from the military canteens. Eating hot food in the freezing cold is a fantastic experience.
- Hotels in Gangtok: The Mayfair Spa Resort offers incredible luxury after a cold day in the mountains. If you want a clean, budget-friendly option, the Summit Golden Crescent is a highly rated hotel near the main Gangtok market.
